Hey Werewhale fans,

It's been quite some time since we've posted art around here. Truth is, after the mad push to get the comic done and ready for comic-con, we attended to other parts of our art lives.

But have no fear, we've been tossing ideas back and forth for the next issue and we're in the process of trying to nail some stuff down. At this point in time, I'll be continuing the werewhale story into issue #2, while Chris, Jon and Jay will probably do something entirely different. (Maybe introduce another creature or story)

For the past month, I've been busy writing a new tale. One that helps establish the story from part one. Last night, I broke out the sculptey and started modeling a new werewhale. I wanted something more human, and more fierce. My plan is to do at least a whole bust, I'd love to do the whole body. (I originally bought 4 bars of clay, and it's going to take much more than I had thought. And I need to figure out how much clay can be put in the oven, and if a wire frame can accompany it.)

HLast week I got half-laid off at work. I'm down to part-time status now and in between redoing my design portfolio and sending off resumes and such, I now have loads of time to paint the comic. Here's 8 hours worth of painting. I'd say this page is about 80% done. I still need to finalize some areas, do clean-up. And I'm not sure if I like panel 2 right now. I may need to redraw the whole thing. (and add the group back in too)

EDIT: Here's the second page for this story. Needs a lot of work. I'm thinking of redrawing the whale...to show his legs and human form more. And I also want to repaint panel 3.

So here are some face shots for a couple of characters. One part of my story deals with WWII german scientists extracting the werewhale from a glacier. It's just going to take 2 pages, and be mostly panels of their faces, with the action going on behind them. I want one guy to look old and really evil looking and the other to be young and strong. They'll be having a conversation about what and where this THING came from...and what they're planning doing with it.

Happy New Year!

Now that OhTen is upon us, we figured that it was finally time to give the Werewhale story it's due. It's a project that was born on a midnight summers stroll way back in 2008 - my, we were such children then. Then, last year we started developing stories and characters and hoped to get some pages done in time for Con.

This year, though, we intend to finish the story. We're going to tell a bunch of mini short stories featuring the werewhale, where we each illustrate half the book. If everything goes according to plan, we'll print in time for San Diego this year.

So to start things off, here's my take of The Captain character. (Sure, I've designed him last year, but I wanted to do a new take on it. - Additionally since I handle the flashback part, I'm going to do his younger self as well.) My plan is to do all the character concepts this month, and the start drawing pages in February.

Wow. We started this blog a year ago, and in that time we did about 14 challenges, plus a book and some promo projects. Not bad. (I think we both improved a lot, so High Five!) But I'm also greedy to get even better, and we need to do more this year. We all get super busy, and get real jobs from time to time and that all comes first, of course, but I really want to see some major progress (for next years Con, the Werewhale comic, and Volume #2). I have a whole lot of ideas for Challenges, some easy and fun, and some that could end up being very hard.

NEW CHALLENGE: (It was Chris' turn, but he can get the next 2 if he wants)
Life of a Character -
Create a character and draw 8-10 different ages in his/her life. You'll want to line them up next to each other, standing on the same level ground (like a police lin-up), so that we can see the changes from one age to the next.

Think about height, clothing, hairstyles, expression, pose, wrinkles, etc.

Forget about it! Maroni's got your back.

Comic-con has sort of become my new years. Each year I come back with a resolution and a bunch of goals. I receieved a lot of feedback from my (and our) portfolio book this year and I need to get going on building some new work.

Some of the things I need to work on this year.
1. Volume. Use a lot less black and use more tertiary/complimentary colors. Instead of using jabby paint marks, as if I were drawing, use shapes of color.
2. More Energy. I'm loosing the energy of my sketches and line work when I transfer to paint.
3. More concepts. Show thinking process.
4. More Range. Different headshots, hairstyles, expressions; Environments, props, weapons.
5. More reference.
6. Try out photo-manipluation - painting.

Worked on the cover to my sketchbook. I had this old Brock Sampson piece from last year laying around that was horrible. I was looking thru old files this morning, saw it, and thought...I know how to fix this. It's no longer Brock anymore, however. I'm thinking it's the First Mate. (Like this is why he has that oct tattoo.)
